What is Acupuncture
Acupuncture is the insertion of very thin needles through a patient’s skin at strategic points on the body.
In Traditional Chinese medicine, acupuncture is believed to rebalance the body’s energy, or qi, and prompt the body to release natural chemicals to fight illness or symptoms.
In Western medicine, acupuncture is gaining popularity as an effective method of pain and/or symptom relief for a variety of diseases and conditions, including:
– Fibromyalgia
– Headaches, including tension headaches and migraines
– Arthritis
– Neck, back or knee pain
– Menstrual cramps
– and more…
How does it work?
In Chinese medicine, acupuncture aims to rebalance the body’s energy (qi) with needles that are inserted into specific acupuncture points. By applying acupuncture to certain points, it is thought to improve the flow of qi, which in turn improves overall health.
Within the framework of Western medicine, Acupuncture points are believed to stimulate the central nervous system to release chemicals into the muscles, spinal cord and brain. These biochemical changes may stimulate the body’s natural healing abilities and promote physical and emotional health.
Acupuncture needles stimulate the body to:
– React to an illness or symptom
– Rebalance the body
– Release natural chemicals, such as endorphins and neurotransmitters, to alleviate pain and control nerve impulses.
Studies have shown that acupuncture can be effective for a variety of conditions. However, acupuncture is not for everyone. If you choose to see an acupuncturist, discuss it with your doctor first and find a practitioner who is licensed and experienced.
