What You Need to Know About Hypertension

What Is Hypertension?

Hypertension, also known as high blood pressure, is a medical condition in which the force of a patient’s blood against their artery wall is consistently higher than normal for long periods of time. The amount of blood the heart pumps and the amount of resistance the blood flows in the arteries determine the blood pressure. The more the heart pumps and the narrower the arteries, the higher the blood pressure.

Symptoms

Most patients may have high blood pressure for years without experiencing any symptoms. Some patients may experience headaches, shortness of breath or nosebleeds. However, patients often do not associate these symptoms with hypertension. This is the reason why patients should have their blood pressure checked on a regular basis.

Treatment

There are two types of treatments for hypertension:

  1. Prescription medication, for example:
    • Angiotensin-converting enzyme (ACE) inhibitors
    • Angiotensin II receptor blockers (ARBs)
    • Diuretics
    • Beta-blockers or Alpha-blockers
    • Calcium channel blockers
    • Alpha-agonists
    • Renin inhibitors
    • A combination of medications
  2. Lifestyle changes, such as:
    • Weight loss
    • Quitting smoking
    • Eating a healthy diet with less fat and more fruits and vegetables
    • Reducing sodium intake
    • Getting regular aerobic exercise
    • Reducing alcohol intake

The Appletree Hypertension program is designed for patients who have been diagnosed with hypertension. This program is overseen by a specialist or family physician. Medical Assistants work as technicians alongside the physician during these shifts. The program is aimed to monitor changes in a hypertensive patient’s blood pressure. Over time, a hypertensive patient’s medication may need to be modified as changes to their life affect their blood pressure and respective treatment.
